Information for patients having flexible endoscopy.
Modern fibreoptic technology allows Dr Braham to examine your nose, sinus openings, nasopharynx (back of the nose), throat, larynx (voice box) and pharynx (gullet) to accurately diagnose conditions of these regions using a flexible endoscope (camera).
The procedure is used for examining sinus drainage problems, eustachian (ear tube) problems, breathing problems in adults and children, snoring, people with throat problems or voice problems and swallowing disorders. It often gives more accurate diagnosis and helps plan better operations.
How is the procedure performed?

The endoscopy is performed under local anaesthetic via a spray to the nose, which will minimise any discomfort. The spray has an unpleasant taste, and you may experience difficulty swallowing. Do not eat or drink anything in that period of time; but you may eat before and after the anaesthetic has worn off. This will last about 30 minutes. Whilst waiting for the procedure, you cannot blow your nose. If it runs gently, wipe your nose with a tissue. It is ok to swallow the spray.
A small fibre-optic telescope is then passed through your nose to examine these regions of the body. If necessary, Dr Braham may ask you to sing a few notes or indeed snore. The results can be visualised on a television monitor if you wish (East St. Kilda rooms only). The examination will take about 10 minutes followed by your consultation with Dr Braham.
There are no risks involved with this procedure. You can drive home after the procedure. Before this technology was developed general anaesthetic and hospital admission with its attendant risks and costs were often necessary.
The equipment is expensive and delicate.
