Comparing the noses of people from different nationalities all over the world shows noticeable differences. For example, people with Indian heritage generally have thick nasal skin, rounded tips, and broader nostrils. Furthermore, they typically have a downward-sloping nasal structure and a high nasal bridge, often with either a hump or a bump. These differences must be taken into account with patients seeking an Indian Rhinoplasty. Melbourne Specialist ENT Surgeon Dr Stephen Kleid regularly performs a range of Nose Surgery on patients of Indian origin.
Considering Rhinoplasty surgery? Information is just one click away.
There are numerous differences in nose structure among people worldwide. Your nose can tell a lot about your ethnicity, as well as, the evolution of your ancestors.
Wider noses are found in people descending from humid and warm climates. Whereas, residents and descendants of cold and dry climates typically have narrow noses.
Apart from smelling and breathing, our noses can also regulate the temperature of the air we inhale. Therefore, a narrow nose will cause turbulence in the inhaled air, making it warmer for people living in cold regions. Whereas, wider nostrils will cause no impediment to air current, which is necessary for those that live in the tropics.
The shape of the nose is determined by our race, typically Africans have a flat nose, called platyrrhine whereas Caucasians have a narrow nose, known as leptorrhine and those of Asian descent have noses, with features between platyrrhine and leptorrhine, that we call mesorrhine.
Because of these differences, surgeons must make appropriate adjustments when it comes to patients undergoing nose job procedures in order for the results to blend harmoniously with other facial features. This is even more important when it comes to people from different backgrounds, including those with Indian heritage.
In the past, Rhinoplasty procedures have created the same shape of the nose for patients, regardless of ethnicity. A Rhinoplasty that is tailored to those of Caucasian ethnicity will not provide a satisfactory result for those of Indian ethnicity as the facial structure of the two are completely different.
Rhinoplasty is both a complex and technically difficult surgical procedure. There are two general types of Rhinoplasty, open and closed.
In open rhinoplasty, there will be a small incision in the columella of the nose, the tissue connecting the tip of your nose to its base. Whereas, in closed rhinoplasty procedures, all incisions will be hidden inside the nose.
Ethnic rhinoplasty is a specialized rhinoplasty procedure. It aims to harmoniously alter the structure and shape of the nose to match the facial characteristics unique to each ethnicity. This type of rhinoplasty does not compromise or try to change your ethnic identity, which will result in a natural-looking result. Read our blog Do you need an Ethnic Nose Job?
Revision rhinoplasty is done on individuals who have previously undergone a rhinoplasty procedure one or more times. Surgeons will perform revision rhinoplasty procedures when people are either unhappy with the outcome of their previous rhinoplasty or if they desire improvements in the function and appearance of their noses. It is important to remember that revision rhinoplasty has its limitations. The first attempt is often the best; therefore, choosing an expert surgeon for your rhinoplasty is of the utmost importance.
Your plastic surgeon will decide the type of rhinoplasty appropriate for you based on the anatomy of your nose. The incisions made during an Indian rhinoplasty also depend upon the results the patient desires. Thick skin with nasal tip issues, like those seen in an Indian nose, typically requires an open rhinoplasty procedure. In other words, the surgeon will make incisions on the inner side of the nose. This usually heals well and leaves minimal visible scarring.
Always discuss with your surgeon what part of your nose bothers you, what you want to change and the appearance that you want.

Indian rhinoplasty is a customized rhinoplasty designed for people of Indian descent. Patients with Indian noses exhibit a variety of ethnic characteristics, depending upon their geographical origins or family lineage. Indian rhinoplasty aims to improve the appearance of your nose without erasing your cultural identity. The outcome is an improved nose that maintains ethnic consistency with the surrounding facial features.
Although a rhinoplasty performed on clients of Indian descent has the same goals as a rhinoplasty performed on a client of any ethnic descent, there are some additional challenges with Indian rhinoplasty. Indian noses have thick skin and this requires deliberate alterations of the underlying bones and cartilage in comparison to other rhinoplasty procedures. Moreover, the surgeon must perform more definitive changes on the underlying framework so that the results will be visible through the overlying thick skin. If the changes made to the bones and cartilage are conservative, the new shape of the nose may not be readily visible.
The noses of people of Indian descent vary even between them;

Priyanka is on her way to global domination. She is not only a recognized Indian actress but has won Miss World, is a singer, a producer and has worked in many Hollywood films as well. She was always stunningly beautiful (I mean she won Miss World) but after seeing her older pictures, it is evident that she got a nose job.
Shruti Haasan, who happens to be the daughter of legendary actor Kamal Haasan, is known for her beautiful looks. She has worked in Bollywood as well as South Films. She is one of the few actresses who openly admit undergoing a nose job. We not only love her look but love her confidence as well.
Shilpa Shetty gained international recognition when she won a big brother. She is a fitness enthusiast and a style diva. When you look at her old pictures, there is no denying the fact that she has undergone a nose job. Although, she claims that she doesn’t believe in plastic surgery, her nose tells a different story.
Vaani Kapoor is a new name in the industry, but she has gained quite a lot of popularity due to her looks. The actress, however, didn’t always look like this. When you compare her face to old films, her nose looks sharper, her cheekbones are higher, and her lips look fuller. Although, she denies it, we say otherwise.
Preity Zinda was known for her girl next door cutesy appearance and of course, her dimple. She gave many popular hits throughout her career. However, she recently received a lot of criticism after her changed appearance. Fans do not seem to like her lifted nose, chiselled cheeks and fuller lips. We think that it’s a matter of personal choice. If plastic surgery has made her happy, why not!
Aishwarya Rai is known as one of the most beautiful women in the world. It came as a shock to the world when she underwent the knife to enhance her nose. Her picture, however, tells another story. We can see a droopy tip in her older pictures which is now completely gone.
Aditi Rao Hydari is not as famous as other actresses, but she has gained a huge fan following due to her drop-dead gorgeous looks. She was always beautiful, but the miracles of rhinoplasty took her beauty to another level. We are a massive fan of Aditi as well as her plastic surgeon. However, she has never admitted to undergoing any surgery, we can see the difference.
Karishma Kapoor is one actress who we do not think needed a nose job. She already had quite sharp features, but the beauty decided to further enhance her features by getting a nose job and lifting her cheekbones. The results are so natural that they are almost undetectable. One can only see the difference by looking at her old and new photographs side by side. Her surgeon did a great job.
Katrina Kaif needs no introduction. She has done numerous films and is an impeccable dancer. Her facial changes have been very subtle. The plastic surgeon she chose must have been talented. As she was consistently onscreen, she doesn’t look drastically different. However, over the years, her face has changed a lot.
Since rhinoplasty alters the appearance of your face, it is important to find an experienced and extremely skilled nose surgeon. This holds more importance with Indian Rhinoplasty as the procedure can pose certain challenges. It is vital you find a surgeon who has experience performing these types of Rhinoplasty and can tailor the procedure to meet your specific needs. The Indian nose has thick skin with weak cartilage. This makes Indian rhinoplasty a particularly difficult and delicate process.
